April 8th : Looks like Beck is going to do some community work whilst Nick heads off with friend Michael to Costa Rica and maybe Columbia (Stephen doesn't like the sound of that, but perhaps the dangers are a bit of a myth? Avoid drug cartel cities Nick!). Then they meet up and head to Cuba possibly. Nick wrote of trying to catch up with Stephen, but time is tight when Sephen is in California in June, so it may not be possible. Getting down there and catching up may be too big a mission. Here is a snipet of Nick's email.... "Im still in Nicaragua, i was in Granada which was a rather nice colonial sort of town, but am currently on the island of Ometepe...Very funky place, its an island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua (which is a fu$%n big lake by the way) the biggest in central america i think..the island has two volcanoes one active one not, i have climbed the biggest one which was no mean feat, like 1600 metres more i think..rebekah is off cllimbing the second one today, i passed , i think one volcanoe is enough for me..it was fun though, ten or eleven hours all up, the only bad thing was we didnt make it all the way to the crater, like 20 minutes off, as our guide was a silly bugger and darted of really fast with some girl who was a pro mountaneerer. April 15th : We just received below photos from Rebekah (which Stephen keep spelling incorrectly... sorry!). Nick phoned briefly last night. Seems he will stay on a bit and do some volunteer work. Good on him! May 4th: "I went to Costa Rica over the weekend which was nice, the schools here were closed for monday and tuesday so we headed there on friday for a rfew days which was lovely...A beach called playa samara, it was great, very hot and a bit windy but great beach, we stayed at this guys place who is canadian, but bought a business there the usual sort of story..good guy." May 11th: " yeh i stay away from nica food now, which is basically rice and beans and a bit of oil...last night i had a delicious pasta which beck cooked, she got rather vexed though (i love that word ever since creole belize) as supposedly i cant keep my head out of the kitchen...i just love cooking soo much though, im soo glad you did it heaps when i was younger it really solidified a true love for it...every day after school i stop by the market and get fresh herbs fruit veges chilles wow, even if i do get gringo prices, %$#%@ i hate being called that anyway, its still like 20 cents if that for a kilo of tomatoes, 10 cents for a lettuce, only iceberg but pfff, i got stared blankly at when i asked for coss hehe.... "i live very cheap here apart from the odd splurge, which frankly, is needed if i dont want to go mad...plus you brought me up with good taste and an eye for the finer things so hmmm...becks birthday i spoiled her but not really, didnt buy her a pressy which was cheeky, but we stayed in a beach side town in a lovely boutique inn which we had to ourselves..cleaner than clean sheets, air con, bottle of champaz waiting beside the bed" "i would love love love to go to cuba and in a way id be an idiot if i didnt work out a way to...cuba though is very xy ive been told, flights from cancun then money, cause you cant use local money, communism obviously, although i did get the email of a cuban guy who reckons he could get me black market food cards...if cuba is out, beck and i would technically have enough time to head thru costa to panama and then fly from pqanama city to bogota columbia or maybe even a bit further down then work our way up...this all depends on funds of course..." May 18th: Stephen was in Auckland when Nick called via Skype. A LOVELY 60 minute chat. Stephen had to abort the idea of flying south to meet the guys after his visit to San Francisco in June. Just not enough time. Nick is still working as a volunteer. All seem OK apart from what Stephen suspects is amebic dysentery. Beck took Nick to the clinic and hopefully it will be OK. Cuba looks to be on the cards. June 6th: "Beck and i just arrived back in mexico, the yucatan, today after a serious bus mission...we were in nicaragua like a day and a half ago, serious tavelling...we got a bus from granada where we were volunteering to honduras and from there got a boat to belize then went through the whole of belize in a day and into mexico...we are now in tulum which is on the same coast as cancun...we want to leave here tommorrow and head to cancun and from there to cuba, but wow thats a real leveler reading that forwarded mail, thanks for that dad...we are thinking the visa might be ok and maybe we can get it at a travel agent in cancun, im not sure we have head many mixed reports..i have no idea how we could get euros though, we are going to have to go there with us dollars which sucks, but to buy euros, noyt that im sure if we even can will be way to exy...i still havnt got onto mum, as the few times i tried there was no one home and here mobile was off...im going to try tonight for sure...the last few days have been hectic travel so im glad to be here in mex now...i hope this cuba thing will be possible..it was a snap change from columbia, we thought it would be cheaper but its going to turn out more expensive than columbia for sure...but hey, once in a life time opportunity i know..." - return to Home Page -
