Pre-Olympic beer trials

In true Olympic spirit, Athoman.com hosted the Pan-European beer tasting on 21/8/00. Contestants from various non-European nations entered and 13 entrants crossed the finish line.

This was a scientifically controlled and serious event. Not only were results recorded but the data- currently under analysis by the judges using state-of-the-art statistics software- will be published in either "Nature" or "Science" ASAP.

This is a record of this significant event.

2) To the left we can see judge Jon Atherton examining the Thai entrant "Singha"

3) Above judge Stephen ensures that results are recorded in the most exact way. These results are open to public scrutiny- please examine.

4) Above control judges were introduced to ensure research methodology. Rusty Atherton rated the New Zealand entrant, Steinlager , highly. Below observer Jim finds it all too much.
5) Judges (from left) Ben, Stephen, John and Charlie Sutton celebrate with the winner from Yorkshire, Old Peculiar. Old was well ahead despite a strong result from Judge Zornig for the Japanese entrant Sapporo. Standard deviations applied, the U.K. is still a clear winner. Close second was New Zealand's entrant Steinlager and then Italy's Stella Artois.
6) The stress of judging behind them at around 1:00am, the judges retire to watch "The Matrix" DVD projected on the lounge wall....
