Around April 9th Nick left from France on the Camino de Santiago walk. It wasn't until reaching Leon some weeks later that he was able to get some photos to us. Crossing the Pyrenees was a challenge but he met up with some folks who look like fun. We went 10 days without hearing from him but he had heard the sad news about his old pal Rusty dying. On April 21 he arrived in Burgos and wrote, "A few days ago one of the mad spaniards in the group decided it was a good idea to walk by moonlight after dinner. We ended up walking 52.5 kms that day. Madness...". Indeed! It should be about another 2 weeks of walking. On the 29th of April Nick was in Leon. He wrote, " Arrived yesterday and stayed at the Albuergue Parroquial (Church refuge) which normally cost 5 Euros. Was okay but I decided to stay in Leon an extra day as for the past three have been suffering from what I think was either food poisoning or bad water from a non-drinkable well. Lots of vomiting and diarrhrea which has been pretty tough to walk, but been forcing myself to do it with the odd puke and rest break..... this ain't a race and I've treated myself to a hotel room... I need a rest... My left toenail on the big toe of left foot finally fell off last night, the right will probably go soonish too. Went to a free pilgrim clinic in Pamplona a week or so back and she said both would drop off. Hurts something nasty when the boot is on but oh well." Nick was sad to let the group get ahead, but will go on by himself. He mentioned that the hotel was swish and was used in the film "the way". Not bad- Stephen found this wee overview of it. And so the challenge continues..... - return to home page - |
