Back in November 2010 James was granted an extended visa in the UK. A very anxious James submitted an application to extend his stay in November 2013 and on April 4th 2014 missed a postal delivery that he collected the next day on his lunch break. You can see what was in the post - it made for a very relieved James and Anthony. Indeed we caught him just after he opened the letter. 4 days prior Nick had arrived at La Cachette, the family pad in France, for the first time and seemed impressed. If all goes well, we will all meet up in England in June - Nick, James and boyfriend Anthony, Olivia and Lochie and Stephen and Paulie. Interestingly both gentlemen shared concerns regarding xenophobia and right wing nationalism. Nick had his first experience at the local cafe the night before he left Aapril 7) for the Camino walk. A Dutch anaesthetist went on about foreigners (ironic given he is in France?) and Nick says he had to politely object and excuse himself when it got racist (good man). Europe is seeing a right ressurgence which we guess is a response to the economic climate. Immigrants make good scapegoats. Or perhaps watering down distinct and homogenous local cultures is a threat to many? That week in French municipal elections there was a big swing to the right (Paris stays Socialist with the first woman mayor). Interesting. What hope for the EU? James wrote on his facebook page "Facing deportation is an unimaginably difficult thing. Hearing daily remarks through the scaremongering media, or even walking down the street, about the dangers of immigrants always feels like a personal attack and whenever I confront it, people say, "oh, but you're different." I ask them, "why am I different?" That is usually followed by silence. In truth, there is no logic behind outright xenophobia." James different? You're more English than the English! - return to home page -
