Walking the Line in northern New South Wales

Site updated on 14 Jun 2010

June 12th Paulie and Stephen headed to Brunswick Heads. Her Majesty's birthday weekend. It's close to Byron Bay, and how the seaside used to be - undeveloped and friendly. Very old worldie. And given the freeway bypasses it, it may stay that way. A mix of retirees, hippies, fishermen and artists. Stephen's bro Chris asked us down to join him in a walk along the train line that has been abandoned for 9 years. Amazing how quickly nature takes over.

Chris and Louise stayed with their pals Tony and Patty. Stephen and Paulie stayed at the 1930s Brunswick Heads pub. Basic (first time Stephen has shared a bathroom in accommodation for 20 years! Paulie claimed it reminded her of boarding school) but it was clean and fun. These country folks party - a band was on at the pub both nights.

A great weekend. The walk was OK too although VERY overgrown and at times the rough and ready lads had to force their way through lantana and weeds (their clothes were a mess).

Arrived at night in time for the band to play

A good mix of folks for the live bands on both nights of our stay

After a dinner at the Fish Co-op, we took advantage of the band below

Awaking to a lovely mild day

Waiting on Brother Chris and his pal Tony - time to walk the line from Bilinudgel!

The tracks, which last saw a train 9 years prior, was clear in parts

..and no so clear in others!

Local artists took their work off the streets

Off again to the second tunnel

There were tracks under this

Tony a-tangled

Tunnel 2. 400 metres long

Time for a Beer Break

Nearly walked through bushes and over the edge... a bridge

Snake bridge. There were 4 snakes on this stretch. Did I catch one in the bottom left?

Less overgrown where beasties grazed

The last bridge over the Brunswick River just before Mullumbimby

Chilling with the locals over breakfast

The next day a morning walk

That's Byron Bay in the distance

A quick think before heading home

The pub in a quieter state
