1950s/60s

John Atherton was an old school journo. For close to four years in the mid-sixties he worked in the U.S. as foreign correspondant for Australian Associated Press in New York. He had done a stint at the "Toledo Blade" (Ohio) in 1960 as well. A funny guy- put a few folks around him and he was the life of the party. But he drank too much and smoked too much-a combination which took him to an early grave at the age of 52. A so/so marriage (but you'll have to wait for the book for this story!). Above doing his thing in New York Times office.

Want to read some of his stuff? Race riots, Vietnam, some interesting stories...

The shot on the left is Stephen and brother Jon(left) in Alley Pond Park. The family lived in Queens, New York.

At right is a visit to Ottowa and the Cahill family. The cute guy on the right of the guard is Stephen.

John gets Sheriff Hirsh's deputization in Lucas County Ohio 1960
